Balancing your High Street

BalanceHere at Revolutionary Arts, we’ve spent a lot of time playing with High Streets, exploring public space and working out the potential of empty shops.

We reckon every town or city centre needs a mix of four things; Shops, Work, Civic and Social.

We need shops, both useful ones and ones that are fun to shop in, and we need places to work, especially ones that make something. We need social spaces, like the coffee shop and the handy bench in the street, and we need the more formal civic functions, from the library to the dentist, which help build a community.

Get the balance right and you’ve got a futureproof town centre. Here’s a handy way to map how your town centre is doing – download our PDF and plot your town centre on the graph. If it’s off balance… get to work.
